MISSION

PLASTIC POLLUTION IS A GLOBAL ISSUE.  CAN WE ACTIVATE A GLOBAL NETWORK OF YOUTH ENGAGED IN SOLUTION?

Approach

Create an interactive 3-day summit that will give teens who are already interested in the issue an opportunity to learn, grow and share so they return to their communities empowered to implement solutions.

For three days in March of 2011, students participated in activities ranging from a scavenger hunt and talent show to  research updates, workshops on science and media,  leadership & team building exercises, brainstorming and action planning.  Most importantly the event encouraged students to network and share, which created lifelong friendships that span dozens of languages and time zones.

Speakers included Ocean Conservation Leader J. Nichols, Actor and Environmentalist Ed Begley Jr., Marcus Eriksen & Anna Cummins of 5 Gyres, Professional Surfer and Youth Activist Kyle Thiermann, Explorer and Founder of Algalita Marine Research Captain Charles Moore, Long Beach Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal and youth leader extraordinaire, Jordan Howard.

Results

150 teens representing 30 teams from 14 countries–including India, Indonesia, Italy, Chile, Kenya, Canada, Uganda, Chile, Bahamas and Guam–attended the summit

“My students learned so much, not just about what is being done to to combat the problems caused by our ‘throw-away’ society, but also about international cooperation, the way scientific evidence is used differently in different countries, and the power of youth to make a difference. For all of us it was an opportunity to meet some truly inspirational people and make new friends.”
